Codeine phosphate is a drug used to suppress coughs and relieve moderate to severe chronic pain when general pain relievers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen cannot relieve the symptoms. Codeine is in the group of opioids ( Opioids /Narcotics) that work to reduce pain by binding to opioid receptors in the central nervous system, which is the brain and spinal cord. It is often used in combination with paracetamol or other pain relievers to increase the effectiveness of pain relief. Patients may feel drowsy or breathe more slowly due to the effects of the drug if they take too much.

Tramadol hydrochloride is a new type of centrally acting analgesic with two complementary mechanisms of action: an opioid and an aminergic. Tramadol has similar analgesic properties to codeine but has a laxative effect, causing a feeling of relaxation.
